Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

Intent

At Stamford Park Primary School, we believe that the learning of a language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It helps them to develop communication skills, including key skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The children’s knowledge of how language works will be developed and extended. Lessons will enable pupils to make substantial progress in one language. The linguistic skills gained will assist and lay foundations for further language learning. It will provide pupils with the confidence and independence to explore and be able to attempt manipulation of the structure of language. Learning another language gives children a new and broader perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others. We strive to foster a lifelong love of languages.

Links to our values:

  • Respect – Listening to and valuing a range of spoken and written texts, authors, and cultural perspectives
  • Cooperation – Engaging in discussion about language learning, sharing ideas, and working collaboratively with others
  • Consideration – Reflecting thoughtfully on different languages, structures, and the perspectives of others
  • Resilience – Persisting when learning new vocabulary, grammar, or challenging linguistic structures

National Curriculum alignment:

Our Languages curriculum is designed in line with the Primary National Curriculum to ensure coverage of statutory requirements, progression of knowledge and skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and preparation for the next stage of education. Pupils develop fluency, comprehension, confidence, and independence in using a modern foreign language, with opportunities to explore its structure, cultural context, and practical applications.
