Welcome to the Eco Council’s page 2021-2022
This year we are very excited as we now have an Eco Council for both the infant and junior department. The junior department will meet weekly on a Thursday morning and the infants will join us at least half-termly or whenever we begin a new initiative.
We have a lot of exciting things lined up for this year!
Preparing for Sports Week!
Today, we have been out on the field litter picking in preparation for sports week. In half an hour, we managed to fill 4 big, black bin bags!
This year we have been focusing on reduction of waste and recycling. We have now teamed up with Empties Please to provide a place to recycle ink cartridges and toners at school. We will recycle all of the school’s ink cartridges and would love it if you brought your old, branded ink cartridges and toners into school for us to recycle!
Did you know that more than 40 million cartridges are dumped into landfill every year in the UK alone? The plastic in these cartridges can take up to 1000 years to decompose!
Help us protect our planet and raise money for our school by bringing in your cartridges and toners to recycle!
The Big Walk and Wheel 2022
Well done to everybody who took place in the Big Walk and Wheel this year to help us save our planet by walking and cycling to school. We clocked in well over 3000 journeys on foot, cycling and scooting! We were in the top 12% of schools Nationwide!
The Eco Council members decided they wanted to tackle litter in our school and were delighted to get out and clean our playgrounds. We have cleaned the upper and lower junior playgrounds thoroughly and will soon be moving onto the infant playground and the school field. They’ve done an amazing job so far!
Waste Week 2022
As part of waste week 2022, the Eco Council delivered an assembly - a scary thing to do in front of nearly 300 children - to tell the school about waste and how we can cut down. The school focused hard on cutting down on electrical and food waste primarily.
We also collected loads of old electrical equipment to be recycled. Thank you to everybody who brought in old items. We had boxes filled with items!
Switch Off Fortnight
As part of Switch Off Fortnight, we will be trying to reduce the amount of electricity we will be using. Each member of the junior Eco Council have delivered an assembly to their class introducing the idea and teaching them about energy wastage.
We have also taken meter readings in order to see how much electricity we use in a normal week to see whether we can reduce this figure over the next two weeks. Don’t forget, this is something you can do at home too!
