Art and Design

Intent

At Stamford Park Primary School, we ensure that the arts are valued and all staff are dedicated in the effective teaching of Art. We believe that if we teach children to produce creative work, explore their ideas and record them in their sketchbooks, it will then contribute to the quality of their lives, within school and also in the wider community. We feel that Art helps to support children’s learning in a variety of ways, as these skills can then be developed and used across the curriculum in other subjects. Art allows children to express themselves in a creative manner that gives children deep, critical thinking skills and a stronger basis for communication. Our curriculum is designed to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art.

Links to our values:

Respect
Art and Design teaches pupils to respect different cultures, viewpoints, and creative ideas by exploring a wide range of artists and traditions. Children learn to value their own work and the work of others through thoughtful discussion and reflection.

Cooperation
Through shared projects and group activities, pupils learn to work together, share resources, and support one another. Art and Design encourages teamwork as children plan, create, and evaluate outcomes collaboratively.

Consideration
Pupils develop consideration by giving constructive feedback and thinking carefully about how their choices affect others. Art and Design promotes empathy as children respond sensitively to different ideas, materials, and themes.

Resilience
Art and Design builds resilience by encouraging pupils to experiment, take risks, and learn from mistakes. Children develop perseverance as they refine their work and overcome creative challenges.
