Writing

Intent

At Stamford Park Primary School, we want children to be authors who can confidently communicate, recall and apply their knowledge, ideas and emotions through their writing and reach their full potential.

Our aims are to:

  • effectively deliver an ambitious English writing curriculum, using a range of quality texts, varied text types and opportunities for writing across the curriculum
  • build upon previous teaching, with regular assessment to ensure each child’s needs are met and they reach their full potential
  • guide and nurture each individual on their own journey to becoming a successful writer
  • provide exciting writing opportunities and experiences that engage and support all pupils
  • ensure children acquire a wide vocabulary and can spell new words by effectively applying the spelling patterns and rules they have learnt
  • ensure children have a solid understanding of grammar and apply it effectively in their writing
  • ensure children write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
  • encourage children to take pride in the presentation of their writing by developing a legible, cursive, individual handwriting style
  • ensure children have a secure knowledge of phonics to support them in becoming fluent writers

Our writing curriculum overview

We are currently reviewing and refining our Writing Curriculum to ensure it continues to meet the needs of all pupils and reflects the latest best practice in teaching and learning. As part of this process, we are in the process of updating the Writing Curriculum document published on our website.

In the meantime, writing continues to be taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum, supported by high-quality texts, rich vocabulary development and purposeful opportunities for writing across a range of genres. Teaching focuses on developing pupils’ transcription skills, composition, grammar and punctuation, ensuring progression and high expectations across all year groups.

The updated Writing Curriculum document will be published as soon as the review process is complete.

National Curriculum Alignment:
Our curriculum is designed in line with the Primary National Curriculum to ensure coverage of statutory requirements, progression of knowledge and skills in writing, and preparation for the next stage of education. Pupils develop competence in transcription (spelling and handwriting) and composition (articulating ideas and structuring text), alongside grammar and punctuation.
