Phonics

Intent

At Stamford Park Primary School, we aim for children to become fluent readers and writers by teaching phonics through Little Wandle Revised Letters and Sounds, a systematic synthetic phonics programme.

Our Phonics Curriculum:

  • Begins in EYFS and ensures that children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school.
  • Aims to ensure that all children rapidly develop phonological skills to become confident and enthusiastic readers and writers.
  • Enables children to tackle unfamiliar words independently as they read.
  • Has a strong focus on language development, as we know that speaking and listening are crucial skills for reading and writing across all subjects.
  • Encourages children to read widely across a range of genres to develop an understanding of story structure, characters, and a growing vocabulary.
  • Includes a range of reading opportunities to provide a balance between decoding, word recognition, prosody, and comprehension.
  • Provides opportunities to engage and enthuse children, fostering a love of reading.
  • Supports children in using independent strategies to self-monitor and correct their own reading, improving fluency.

Links to our values:
Respect – Listening carefully to others and valuing shared reading and learning.
Cooperation – Working with adults and peers during guided reading and phonics sessions.
Consideration – Supporting others and taking turns during group learning activities.
Resilience – Persisting with decoding and blending unfamiliar words.

National Curriculum Alignment:
Our phonics curriculum is designed in line with the Primary National Curriculum for English to ensure that pupils develop secure early reading skills, including decoding, fluency, and comprehension. The systematic teaching of phonics supports progression in reading and writing and prepares pupils for the wider English curriculum as they move through school.
